Description

Would you be the same person if you had grown up somewhere completely different? A different climate. A different landscape. Different architecture, food, customs, relationships, and rhythms of everyday life. In this episode of The Thinking Room, we explore the philosophy of Japanese thinker Tetsurō Watsuji and his concept of fūdo. Fūdo is often translated as climate or milieu, but Watsuji’s idea goes much further. He asks us to consider whether human beings truly exist separately from the environments, cultures, places, and relationships surrounding them. This is not the claim that geography mechanically determines personality. Instead, Watsuji asks us to think about the continuous relationship between people and the worlds they inhabit. From deserts and cities to migration, climate change, and even online spaces, the question becomes increasingly relevant: If you had been born somewhere completely different, surrounded by another climate, another landscape, another architecture, and another way of living... would you still be the same person? The Thinking Room explores philosophy, ideas, history, society, and the deeper questions behind everyday life. #Philosophy #Watsuji #Fudo #TheThinkingRoom
