Description
Hazel ran the Baxter household — but what was a maid like Hazel actually paid in the 1960s?
Behind the laughs of the classic TV sitcom Hazel was a surprising reality about domestic workers, wages, minimum wage laws, and life in America during the early 1960s.
Hazel Burke cooked, cleaned, helped raise Harold, managed the house, and frequently seemed to be the person really in charge. But while George Baxter was a successful attorney, a full-time live-in maid in the early 1960s might earn only around $50 a week — roughly $2,600 a year, plus room and meals.
And there was an even bigger catch: when Hazel premiered in 1961, household workers were not covered by the federal minimum wage.
In this episode of TV Life Black & White, we go beyond the sitcom and look at the real economics behind Hazel’s life:
- What a full-time maid could earn in the early 1960s
- How Hazel's estimated income compared with George Baxter's
- Why domestic workers weren't protected by federal minimum wage laws
- The Hazel episode where she actually asks the Baxters for a raise
- Why having an employment contract was unusual enough to become a sitcom storyline
- The Social Security problem facing older domestic workers
- How a live-in maid could lose both her job and her home at the same time
- What eventually changed for domestic workers in the 1970s
Hazel premiered in 1961 with Shirley Booth in the title role and became one of America's biggest television hits. But beneath the comedy was a fascinating snapshot of work, money, class, and everyday American life.
So who really ran the Baxter house — George or Hazel?
And did your family have a “Hazel”? Maybe a housekeeper, nanny, grandmother, or another woman who seemed to keep the entire household running. Tell us your story in the comments.
