Description
It is the coldest morning of the year, the house is 61 degrees — and the furnace is RUNNING. You hear it. The fan is blowing. But the air coming out of the vents is cool, and the house will not warm up, and everybody is wrapped in blankets at the breakfast table. And you are already doing the arithmetic: an emergency call in December is $150 to $300 before the man opens his bag. Mi amigo, go downstairs first. Because there is a ninety percent chance that furnace is TELLING you exactly what is wrong with it, right now, in a language nobody ever taught you to read. There is a little window on the front of it, and behind that window a light is BLINKING — and the number of blinks is a message, and the chart that translates it is printed on the inside of the furnace door. The repairman counts those blinks before a single tool leaves his truck. Today I teach you to count them too.
In this video:
• How a furnace actually works: fire inside a steel box, your house air on the OUTSIDE of it — so if the air stops moving, the heat piles up inside the machine
• 5 FREE CHECKS FIRST: thermostat set to HEAT + dead batteries · the furnace power switch that looks exactly like a light switch (people flip it thinking it's the basement light) · the gas · the door safety switch · and THE FILTER
• 🔦 COUNT THE BLINKS: find the sight glass, count the pattern twice, then read the diagnostic chart on the inside of the door. "Four flashes = high limit open." It is free, it is faster than any tool, and it changes the phone call from "my heat is out" to "I'm getting four flashes, high limit open."
• ⭐ THE #1 WINTER FAILURE: dirty filter → air stops moving → heat piles up → the HIGH LIMIT SWITCH cuts the fire on purpose to protect you → after enough cycles it sticks OPEN and the furnace won't fire at all
• THE FIX IS ALMOST FUNNY: power off, find the little black rectangle above the burners, and give it a few firm taps with a screwdriver handle. That usually snaps the bi-metal back together and the furnace lights right up. Free, on the coldest morning of the year.
• 🚫 DO NOT BUY A NEW LIMIT SWITCH. It almost never fails — it was doing its JOB. It is the MESSENGER (same as your dryer's thermal fuse). Replace it without changing the filter and it trips again next week.
• 🕯️ CANDLES PLUG FILTERS FAST — the wax residue coats the filter with a film that looks like almost nothing and chokes the airflow. Burn candles? Change it monthly.
• A filter is NOT better because it costs more — dense allergy filters restrict airflow and can cause this exact overheating on older furnaces
• THE FLAME SENSOR: flames light for a few seconds then go out, three tries, then quits? Polish that thin rod with fine steel wool — $10 part, 5-minute job. But honest: it is the internet's favorite answer and often NOT your problem. Read the code FIRST.
• ⚠️ NOT YOURS: the gas valve, the burners, and the heat exchanger. A cracked heat exchanger means CARBON MONOXIDE. Call a pro TODAY for soot around the furnace, a yellow lazy rolling flame instead of crisp blue, or headaches and sleepiness that get better when everyone leaves the house.
• 🚨 Put a CO detector on every floor and near the bedrooms, and press the test button on the ones you have tonight. It is the cheapest thing I have ever recommended, and the only one that saves lives instead of money.
• If you smell gas — rotten eggs — you troubleshoot NOTHING. Everybody out, call the gas company from outside. No exceptions.
Do it this week, while the house is still warm and nothing is wrong. Six in the morning in January is not when you want to be learning where the little window is.
👉 Tell me in the comments: how many blinks does your furnace show, and what does your chart say it means? I want this comment section to become a wall of codes — somebody with the same furnace as you is going to scroll past and be saved by it. Tell me your county and how old the machine is. I read every one.
