Lalbaugcha Raja: The History Behind Mumbai's Famous Ganpati | 1934–2026

Lalbaugcha Raja: The History Behind Mumbai's Famous Ganpati | 1934–2026 What began with a promise in 1932 became one of Mumbai's most iconic Ganpati traditions. This is the story of Lalbaugcha Raja — from the closure of the Peru Chawl market in 1932, to the installation of the first idol on 12 September 1934, the beginning of the Kambli family's association in 1935, the evolution of the iconic Raja, the massive annual darshan queues, and the extraordinary moment in 2020 when there was no Lalbaugcha Raja for the first time in 86 years. But behind the crowds, the grandeur and the famous face is a much older story — a story of community, faith, livelihood, tradition and a promise that continues to be renewed every year. In this cinematic historical documentary, Bharat Unfolded explores the origins and evolution of Lalbaugcha Raja, one of Mumbai's most famous Ganpati idols and a symbol deeply connected with the city's cultural history. 📜 IN THIS DOCUMENTARY 00:00 — The Mystery of Lalbaugcha Raja 01:17 — The First Lalbaugcha Raja — 1934 01:53 — The Kambli Family — 1935 02:39 — The Massive Queue 03:37 — 2020 — No Raja 04:04 — The Promise Changed From 1932 to 2026, this is more than the story of a Ganpati idol.
