Description

**OAK ISLAND: AI AND LIDAR FINALLY CRACKED THE 231-YEAR-OLD MYSTERY** For 231 years, Oak Island has been one of North America’s most famous archaeological mysteries. The legend began in 1795, when a mysterious depression led searchers to a shaft reportedly containing wooden platforms deep underground. Since then, generations of treasure hunters have searched for the legendary Money Pit. Now, modern technology is changing how investigators look at the island. LiDAR can strip away vegetation and reveal subtle changes in the landscape that are almost impossible to see from the ground. Modern researchers have used terrain data to identify old excavation scars, depressions and possible archaeological targets—giving investigators a map of an island transformed by centuries of digging. But there is a catch. Oak Island has been excavated so extensively that distinguishing an original feature from a later search shaft can be extraordinarily difficult. Even after decades of scientific testing, **no authenticated treasure hoard or definitive vault has been recovered**. The latest investigations have nevertheless produced intriguing evidence of earlier human activity, including old wood, metal objects and other materials whose origins remain debated. So has AI and LiDAR finally solved Oak Island? Not yet. But they may be helping researchers separate the original mystery from more than two centuries of excavation—and that could be the key to finally understanding what really happened beneath the island.
