Description

Rust vs C++ makes more sense when you follow one bug: a reference that becomes invalid after a vector grows. This comparison explores how both languages handle memory, ownership, concurrency, and performance, and why code that compiles in C++ can be rejected by Rust. Modern C++ already has automatic resource management through RAII, destructors, and smart pointers. But cleaning up memory doesn't guarantee that every reference to it remains valid. We explain how Rust's borrow checker and lifetimes address that gap, then compare C++ move semantics with Rust's ownership transfers. The differences become even more important with multiple threads. You'll learn why shared_ptr and Arc don't automatically protect the data they hold, how Rust's Send and Sync traits help prevent data races, and why deadlocks and logic errors still require careful design. We also examine what safety actually costs, from bounds checks and atomic reference counting to locking and unnecessary cloning. Neither language automatically wins on performance. We look at the engineering tradeoffs behind choosing Rust for a new component, maintaining an established C++ system, and connecting the two through carefully designed interfaces. ☕ Enjoyed the video?
