Description
A 65-year-old retiree traveled through Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Cambodia and the Philippines trying to answer what seemed like a simple question:
Where should I live in retirement?
At first, he thought the answer would come down to money. Rent, food, healthcare, transportation and visas all went onto the spreadsheet.
But after spending real time in each country, the things that started mattering most were very different.
Thailand made him think about convenience and what everyday life might feel like as he gets older.
Vietnam showed him the difference between loving a country as a traveler and wanting to grow old there.
Malaysia made healthcare much more than another number in a retirement budget.
Cambodia made him question whether chasing the lowest possible monthly cost was really the right goal.
And in the Philippines, he discovered something he hadn't even thought to put on his spreadsheet: communication, community and being able to picture an ordinary life there.
This isn't about declaring one Southeast Asian country “the best.”
It's about the questions someone should ask before selling everything and retiring overseas.
If you were considering retirement abroad, what would matter most to you: cost, healthcare, convenience, language, or community?
And which country would you want to test for 30 days before making a decision?
