Description

Every God of Death in Mythology Explained in 15 Minutes Osiris is one of the oldest death gods ever recorded, and he might also be the most misunderstood. Most people hear "Egyptian god of the dead" and picture something grim and terrifying, but Osiris was fundamentally a god of hope. Originally a deity of kingship and agriculture, he became the ruler of the dead only after his brother Set murdered him, dismembered his body into fourteen pieces, and scattered them across Egypt. His wife Isis gathered every piece and resurrected him long enough to conceive their son Horus, and from that point forward Osiris became the template for everything Egyptians believed about death and what comes after. He presides over the Hall of Two Truths, where every soul that arrives must face the Weighing of the Heart ceremony.
