In 1858, British settlers landed in the Andaman Islands and found more than 5,000 Great Andamanese people. By 1961, nineteen were left. Today just over fifty survive, and almost every genetic study of Indian ancestry published since has depended on them.
That is not a coincidence. It is the result of a problem researchers have never solved.
India's oldest ancestral population has never been sequenced. The monsoon climate destroys ancient DNA, and no genome from these first inhabitants of the subcontinent has ever been recovered. So geneticists needed a substitute — the closest living relatives of a people who left no readable remains. They found them on an island in the Bay of Bengal.
This video runs the test properly. We compare Andamanese DNA against the major populations of the world and work through them one at a time.
THE ELIMINATIONS
Africa — Colonial anthropologists created the "Negrito" category from physical appearance alone and built a theory of a separate, earlier migration on top of it. Whole-genome sequencing dismantled it. The explanation for Andamanese stature turned out to be something else entirely.
Australia and New Guinea — The visual resemblance to Papuans and Aboriginal Australians is real. The ancestry is not. We explain what the 2019 ancient DNA work revealed about how these groups are actually related.
East Asia — Onge and Jarawa men carry a paternal lineage that separated from its Japanese counterpart roughly 53,000 years ago, and it is common among the Ainu and in Tibet. We explain why that striking fact proves far less than it appears to.
Southeast Asia — Hunter-gatherer remains up to 8,000 years old from Laos and Malaysia carry DNA pointing straight back to the Onge. The closest relatives, and still not the answer.
Europe and the West — The opposite pole of Indian ancestry, and the key to understanding everything that follows.
WHAT ELSE IS IN HERE
Then the genetics. A Harappan woman buried at Rakhigarhi already carried this ancient hunter-gatherer ancestry more than 4,000 years ago. Roughly two millennia of marrying within community locked ancestry proportions in place across the subcontinent. India holds more variation in Neanderthal ancestry than anywhere outside Africa — enough for researchers to rebuild about half the Neanderthal genome from Indian samples alone. And a claim about an unknown extinct human relative in South Asian DNA remains openly contested between two research teams.
By the end, you will understand what the deepest layer of your ancestry actually is, and why the people who carry it most purely now number in the hundreds while it runs through more than a billion.
