Most of us were never taught to get a house ready for winter. We were taught to buy things for it. Every October, stores fill the aisles with heaters, emergency buckets, storm supplies, and things fear tells us we need. But my grandfather’s winter list looked very different. The 10 we buy, counting down: 10. The oats: one of the cheapest hot breakfasts in America 9. The oranges and mandarins: winter citrus, stored somewhere cool 8. The potatoes and onions: two winter staples that should never be stored together 7. The coffee: drink the coffee, then keep the can 6. The pecans: buy by the pound and put them straight into the freezer 5. The furnace filter: change it before the heating season begins 4. The smoke and carbon monoxide alarm: check the date on the back 3. The heated throw: warm the person instead of running a 1,500-watt heater 2. The wool socks: the cheapest thermostat you will ever wear 1. The flannel sheets: warm the bed, not the whole bedroom The 5 we walk past: 1. Bottled water for a storm, when your tap water is already safe 2. Emergency food buckets your family may never actually eat 3. Holiday cookie and candy tins bought months too early 4. Fancy boxed hot cocoa 5. The big space heater as your winter heating plan My grandfather’s winter rule was simple: Buy the winter, not the storm. Safety matters. Space heaters belong directly in a wall outlet, never an extension cord or power strip, and should stay at least three feet from anything that can burn. Heated throws should have automatic shutoff and intact cords. Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms also have a service life, so check the date on the back tonight. Winter is five long months. Prepare for those months, not just the three days everybody is afraid of.
