Description
The Forgotten American Town The Amish Brought Back To Life
Right now, in the rolling farm country of southeast Iowa, there is a county most Americans will never hear of. Davis County sits south of Ottumwa, far enough from any interstate that for most of the twentieth century, leaving was the one thing people here reliably did. For fifty straight years, the county did what dying farm counties do: it lost people. In 1920, 12,574 people called it home. By 1970, only 8,207 remained — a third of the county gone, farm by farm, with no bottom ever in sight.
