Description

Credits: NBC News, 5NEWS In December 2021, Ryan Brandt was working as a server at Oven & Tap in Bentonville, Arkansas, when she served a party of 44 people. The group left a $4,400 tip, which was initially divided between Ryan and another server, giving each of them $2,200. Ryan later said that management told her the tip had to be shared with other employees and that she would only receive a portion of it. The customer who left the tip, Grant Wise, learned about the dispute and reportedly asked the restaurant to return the money before giving Ryan her $2,200 directly. Several days later, Ryan was fired from the restaurant. The incident went viral after Wise publicly discussed what happened, leading to widespread criticism of the restaurant and additional financial support for Ryan. However, the restaurant disputed that she was fired because of the tip dispute, saying her termination was for another reason that it did not publicly disclose. So, the documented sequence is that Ryan had a dispute with management over the tip, received the $2,200 directly from the customer, and was subsequently fired — but the reason for her firing was contested. . . .
