Description
Let's Discuss the Positives About Africa: Are There Any?
I have read the comments on my many videos, along with recommendations and opinions from important friends. After reflecting on them, I returned to my drawing board to find positive aspects to share about black people in Africa. Unfortunately, I found that the negatives often outweigh the positives, sometimes by a significant margin.
To evaluate a civilisation, culture, or country, these fundamental factors are crucial: Well-Being (Subjective Well-Being, SWB), Social Progress, Cultural Values, and Human Development.
Social Progress Index (SPI): This measures how well a country meets its citizens' non-economic needs. It evaluates basic human necessities (nutrition, medical care, shelter), the foundations of well-being (education, information, health), and opportunities (personal rights, freedom, inclusion).
In Africa, the negatives overwhelmingly outweigh the positives on SPI.
Subjective Well-Being (SWB): This assesses overall life satisfaction, positive emotional experiences, and a sense of personal fulfilment. Individualistic cultures often emphasise personal achievement and positive emotions in SWB, while collectivist cultures prioritise social harmony and belonging.
Once again, in Africa, the negatives overwhelmingly outweigh the positives for SWB.
Social Progress: This measures a society's culture by evaluating how effectively it translates economic and cultural resources into tangible human well-being. Rather than judging a culture by its artistic output, historical longevity, or economic wealth (GDP), researchers and sociologists assess it by the quality of life, systemic equity, and individual freedoms afforded to its members.
The pattern continues; on Social Progress, the negatives in Africa overwhelmingly outweigh the positives.
Cultural Values: Sociologists and anthropologists do not rank a society's culture as "better" or "worse". Instead, they assess, compare, and analyse cultural values through established analytical frameworks and multidimensional cultural dimensions.
I regret to say that our cultural values are lacking and outdated. The negatives significantly outweigh the positives.
Human Development: The United Nations Development Programme measures this primarily through the Human Development Index (HDI). It evaluates a society's foundational capabilities and overall well-being rather than assessing it solely through subjective art or lifestyle.
Disappointingly, no single African country ranks in the top 50. The top five highest-ranking African countries are all non-black. Seychelles, Mauritius, Algeria, Egypt, and Tunisia. The Seychelles population is overwhelmingly Creole (90%), which is a mix of East African, Malagasy (Madagascar), French, British, Indian, and Chinese descent. Mauritius is 68% Indian (Asian), while Algeria, Egypt, and Tunisia are Arab countries.
In conclusion, despite my efforts, I struggled to find positive attributes to highlight about the black people of Africa. I will not fabricate Wakanda to appease the meaningless feelings of black Africans whom I believe have not made significant contributions to impress the world. Instead, they are offended by everything but ashamed of nothing.
