Leopard Seals Can Weigh 500 kg #animals #shorts

Leopard seals get their name from the dark spots scattered across their pale throat and belly. Their long bodies, large foreflippers and powerful jaws make them distinctive marine predators. Females grow larger than males, reaching approximately 3.6 metres and weighing up to 500 kg. Their diet is surprisingly varied. Alongside penguins and other seals, they eat fish, squid and tiny crustaceans called krill. They can pursue penguins underwater or catch them near the edges of Antarctic ice. That variety allows them to exploit different food sources rather than relying on a single type of prey. Although closely associated with Antarctic pack ice, leopard seals also travel north through the Southern Ocean. New Zealand receives visitors regularly, and small numbers occur there throughout the year. Some individuals have remained continuously in New Zealand waters for more than 12 months. Resting individuals can turn quickly, despite their relaxed posture. New Zealand’s Department of Conservation advises staying at least 20 metres away and keeping dogs well clear. Photographs taken from a distance also help researchers identify individual seals and track their movements, adding to knowledge of where these wide-ranging animals spend their time. #animals #wildlife #nature #natureholic #LeopardSeal #MarineLife Nature, wildlife, animals, animal facts, wildlife facts, nature facts, amazing animals, wild animals, animal shorts, wildlife shorts, nature shorts, animal videos, wildlife videos, nature videos, leopard seal, seals, leopard seal facts, Antarctic animals, marine mammals, New Zealand wildlife
