Description

A beluga whale’s muscular appearance comes from the interaction between its underlying muscles, skin and thick blubber deposits. Blubber can account for up to 40% of its body weight, helping insulate this marine mammal against cold Arctic and subarctic waters. Scientists studying beluga anatomy identified 2 elongated fat pads along the underside of the body. Contractions of the abdominal muscles tighten the surrounding tissues and elevate these pads. During observed swimming manoeuvres, the raised structures extended approximately 10–14 cm above the adjacent body surface. The researchers proposed that these changing contours function as control surfaces during rolls and turns. Belugas lack a dorsal fin, making this a fascinating example of how soft tissue could contribute to stability and manoeuvrability underwater. The visible shape involves substantial fat deposits as well as muscular action. Their distinctive build also supports survival in cold environments. Thick skin and blubber retain warmth, while relatively small flippers and tail flukes limit exposed surface area. The result is a body adapted for both insulation and movement, with contours that change as the whale bends and swims. #animals #wildlife #nature #natureholic #BelugaWhale #WhaleFacts Nature, wildlife, animals, animal facts, wildlife facts, nature facts, amazing animals, wild animals, animal shorts, wildlife shorts, nature shorts, animal videos, wildlife videos, nature videos, beluga whale, beluga facts, whale anatomy, beluga muscles, whale blubber, marine mammals
