Description

Ney by Ali Farbodnia, kamancheh by Rasul Adib, tar by Erfan Motakiaei, vocals & tombak by Fereshteh Modarreszadeh, vocals by Alireza Berenjian, tanbur by Soheil Saadat, kanun, daf & vocals by Farya Faraji. The Epic Iranian series is a musical project where the sounds of the living traditions of Iranian music as they exist today are used to explore the history and epic narrative repertoire of Iranian civilisation. These are not "epic music" in the cinematic, orchestral film-soundtrack sense of the term, but music rooted in the authentic practices of Iranian traditional music that showcase the epic narrative repertoire of Iran's long history. The melody is based on traditional melodies found in the region of Western Iran and Eastern Anatolia, and this specific melodic motif is quite characteristic of the folk songs of many Iranian and Turkic peoples in the area. I previously covered a folk song from Turkey using this same melodic pattern, called "Şah De": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tyqs2r7zHLY Soheil Saadat accompanies the main melody with his own improvisations on the tanbour. The music is rooted in the Classical and folkloric forms of Iranian music, and uses the microtonal mode of Shur. The lyrics are both contemporary to the era of Nader Shah, and are in Persian, as well as the Turkic dialect spoken natively by Nader. The Persian poem is by Moshtāq-e Eṣfahāni, a poet who lived during the times of Nader, as evidenced by the highly propagandistic and laudatory nature of the poem. The Turkic portion of the lyrics are from the Nāderī Inscription, a 24-couplet Turkic panegyric by Gülbün Afshar, a poet associated with Nader's court. It was carved in Nastaʿlīq on a cliff at the Darband-e Arghun Shah entrance to Kalāt, about 15 metres above the river, and was commissioned by Nader. Lyrics available in the pinned comment below.
