Description

In the Desert Rose cuttings video, I said something that most channels never say directly. A cutting-grown Desert Rose will not develop the same caudex as one grown from seed. This video is the follow-through on that statement. If you want the most impressive caudex your Desert Rose can develop, you need to start from seed. And starting from seed means understanding one biology fact that changes everything: from the very first weeks of a seedling's life, the tissue between the root and the first leaves — the hypocotyl — begins to swell. That swelling is the caudex beginning. It starts before the seedling has its first true leaves. Before it has seen its first summer. Before it has been watered more than a handful of times. You can see it at three to four weeks old. A small swelling at the base of the stem, two to three millimeters across. That is the beginning of what will be three or four inches of pale sculptural caudex in ten years. In this video, Elias Yoder — who farms in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania — gives you the complete guide to growing Desert Rose from seed. Why fresh seeds are essential and where to get them. The warmth the Adenium seed needs to germinate — no cold stratification, only heat, 85 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit. The fine perlite and vermiculite germination mix that is completely different from the adult mineral mix. The shallow surface planting. The heat mat and humidity dome setup. The three to seven day germination window for fresh seeds in correct conditions. The daily checking ritual that catches the first arch. Moving to bright indirect light immediately. The first two weeks of consistent moisture — the only time in this plant's life when continuous moisture is correct. The critical moment of the first hypocotyl swelling at three to four weeks. The transplant at six to eight weeks into the adult mineral mix with the hypocotyl positioned above the soil surface — the most important detail of the entire process. The gradual outdoor transition in the first year. The full adult care beginning in the second summer. And what it means to have a plant whose entire history belongs to you. ⬇️ Everything covered in this video: 00:00 — The connection to the cuttings video — why seed produces the superior caudex 03:30 — The hypocotyl — the biology of where the caudex begins 07:00 — The moment that makes seed growing worth it — the first swelling at week three 11:00 — Choosing seeds — freshness is everything 14:30 — The specialty supplier versus the garden center display 18:00 — Plant within one to two weeks of receiving 21:30 — The warmth requirement — no cold stratification, only heat 25:00 — 85 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit — the optimal germination range 28:30 — The germination mix — fine perlite and fine vermiculite 32:00 — Surface or very shallow planting 35:30 — The heat mat and humidity dome setup 39:00 — Day three to seven — the first germination arch 42:30 — Moving to bright indirect light immediately 46:00 — The first two weeks — consistent moisture is correct here 49:30 — Day twenty-one to thirty — the hypocotyl swelling appears 53:00 — The transplant at six to eight weeks 56:30 — The hypocotyl above the soil — the most important single detail 60:00 — The first outdoor summer — root building season 63:00 — The first winter — not full dormancy 66:00 — The second summer — the most important growing season 69:00 — The caudex at twelve to twenty millimeters at end of year two 72:00 — What the plant with a history that belongs entirely to you means 🌿 More old methods at: eliasyoder.com 📌 Subscribe for practical methods rooted in the old ways.
