Description

Southern Michigan isn't just lakes and farmland. It's sitting on one of the most perfectly circular geological basins on Earth, a 300-million-year-old bowl in the crust filled with salt, oil, gypsum, brine and coal, then buried under hundreds of feet of rock dragged down from Canada by the ice sheets. In this video, we dig into why Southern Michigan may be sitting on some of the most valuable land in human history: the salt mine 1,100 feet under Detroit, how ancient brine built Dow Chemical, the buried Niagaran pinnacle reef oil traps, the forgotten Saginaw coal mines, the gypsum under Grand Rapids, and the glacial lobes that left 11,000 kettle lakes and some of the richest soil in the Midwest. Then the money: Kalamazoo's Celery City muck farms, the Lake Michigan fruit belt, Saginaw Valley sugar beets, why the auto industry was born in Detroit, Grand Rapids furniture, Battle Creek cereal, the Detroit River choke point, the Great Lakes Compact, and the PFAS problem moving through the same gravel that holds the water. ⏱️ CHAPTERS 0:00 Southern Michigan Is a Bowl 0:56 The Billion-Year-Old Rock Underneath 1:29 The Michigan Basin: A Geological Bullseye 2:12 Why Did It Sink?
