In the February 2021 Texas winter storm, 147 of the 246 confirmed deaths were aged 60 or older. Of the 158 hypothermia deaths, 107 were in that same age group. The Defense Department's own design standard caps a one-person lift at 51 lb in ideal conditions, yet a full 7-gallon water jug weighs about 60 lb. Falls caused over 43,000 deaths among adults 65 and older in 2024, and a blackout takes the lights away. So why does almost every blackout checklist still tell you to haul heavy gear?

In this video, we talk about blackout supplies for adults over 60 that you can store, move and use without heavy lifting, including a hands-free headlamp and stick-on motion lights, one-gallon water jugs instead of 7-gallon containers, a WaterBOB bathtub bladder, a NOAA weather alert radio, a small LiFePO4 power station for CPAP and phones, a Frio insulin cooling wallet, wool and mylar layers, an easy-open pill organizer with a paper medication list, a folding hand truck, a battery fan used the right way, and a battery-powered carbon monoxide alarm.
If this helped you think through your own setup, hit subscribe so the next one finds you.
