In January 2022, close to 48 miles of I-95 in Virginia shut down in the snow, and some drivers sat there more than 24 hours with no food, water or bathrooms. In the Buffalo blizzard that December, the final count reached 47 dead, and the mayor said people passed away in their cars. Kidde designs its alarms for 40 to 100°F. Wet feet lose heat 25 times faster than dry feet. A bug-out bag is built to walk away, and walking away is the one move a stranded driver shouldn't make.

In this video, we talk about the gap between a bug-out bag and a winter car kit, including a carbon monoxide alarm kept warm in your coat, a sleeping bag too heavy to hike with and what ISO comfort and limit ratings mean, a dry base layer and the Army's COLD rule, wool socks and trench foot at 60°F, the wide mouth bottle and cold-induced diuresis, no-cook calories versus freeze-dried pouches that need 90 oz of water, the power bank that loses half its capacity at 0°F and the gallon-of-gas math, lithium AA cells rated to -40°F, a NOAA weather radio that needs no cell signal, a day of your medications and why insulin can't freeze, and a 60-hour SOS light versus 30-minute road flares.
Subscribe if you want your car ready for the night the interstate closes.
Comment where you're watching from and the one thing your bug-out bag is missing for a winter night in the car.
Pass this along on Facebook, Reddit or the family group chat before the first snow, and thank you for keeping this outfit going.
