Description

In 1991, a Boston University geologist told the Geological Society of America that the Great Sphinx of Giza was thousands of years older than the pharaoh who supposedly carved it. More than 30 years later, the experts still can't agree on who built it. Not one inscription from the age the Sphinx was carved names its builder. So we put five suspects on the table and go through the case for each: Pharaoh Khafre and the quarry, temple and workers' town around the monument; the NYPD forensic artist who compared the Sphinx's face with Khafre's statue; Khafre's father Khufu and his little-known brother Djedefre; Colin Reader's early-dynastic king; and Robert Schoch's water erosion theory, which pushes the Sphinx back to around 10,000 BCE. We also test the Leo alignment, the salt damage, the rainfall evidence, Göbekli Tepe, and a lab experiment suggesting the wind may have started the job. The answer that fits the evidence best is stranger than any single name, and it ends with a line of hieroglyphs that flaked away in 1925.
