“YOU’RE PROTECTING MURDERERS!” Botswana President’s Attack on SA Goes Viral

“South Africa protects murderers!” Botswana’s president has gone viral over remarks criticising South Africa’s handling of suspects wanted in Botswana for murder. At the centre of the controversy is a difficult question: should South Africa hand over suspects to face justice in Botswana if they could face the death penalty? Botswana has retained capital punishment, while South Africa abolished it. This creates a serious legal and diplomatic challenge when extradition requests involve possible executions. The dispute has reignited debate about justice for victims, cooperation between neighbouring countries and whether South Africa’s legal position is protecting human rights or preventing families from seeing justice served. Should South Africa extradite suspects when the death penalty is a possible outcome, or should it refuse to hand them over without guarantees that they will not be executed?
