Description
Canada is letting in Chinese-built EVs that America keeps out. A twenty-five-thousand-dollar BYD went viral here this spring, and it never existed. Meanwhile, the Chinese-built EVs that actually arrived under the new quota mostly wore a Tesla badge. Here's what one of these cars will really cost you to own in this country.
In this video: the Canada-China EV quota and its 6.1% tariff, the Shanghai-built Tesla Model 3, Lotus Eletre, Polestar, Zeekr, Chery with Omoda and Jaecoo, and where BYD really stands. I go through the federal EV rebate that Chinese-built cars don't qualify for, Quebec's Roulez vert, winter range, parts, resale, insurance, the U.S. border question, and seven questions to ask a dealer before you sign.
Sources mentioned: the federal quota rules and EV Affordability Program, Global News, The Globe and Mail, Bloomberg, Automotive News Canada, The Next Web, AutoTrader, CAA and the Norwegian Automobile Federation's El Prix winter test, and MyChoice. There's no U.S. reliability data in this one: the winter test is from Norway and the resale figures are from Australia.
Prices are approximate, in Canadian dollars, and change by province and month. General information only, not a substitute for an inspection by a licensed mechanic.
If you bought an EV tomorrow, how far would you have to drive to reach a dealer that could fix it under warranty? Kilometres and province.
