Description
In the 1500s, Spain controlled the richest silver deposit the world had ever seen — and its king still couldn't pay his own army. This is the real story behind the financial collapse of the Spanish Empire: how Philip II inherited a monarchy already built on debt, how the mountain of silver at Potosí changed everything and nothing, how Genoese and German bankers learned to lend against treasure that hadn't even crossed the Atlantic yet, and how one desperate decision in 1575 set off a chain reaction that ended in one of the bloodiest massacres of the century at Antwerp.
From there, it only gets more expensive — the Spanish Armada of 1588, a war with England that doesn't end when the fleet sinks, a tax system in Castile that quietly carried more of the burden than American silver ever did, runaway inflation, and a fourth bankruptcy in 1596 that finally reveals why Spain's bankers kept lending to a king who had already defaulted on them three times before.
This isn't the "Spain wasted its silver" story you've heard before. It's a story about the difference between wealth and cash — and why even an empire that controlled four continents could run out of both at the same time.
