Description
The Silk Road wasn't a road — and it wasn't really about silk. It was history's first
long-distance financial system: a network of merchants, middlemen, and cities that
moved goods, money, and risk across thousands of kilometers with no banks, no
corporations, and no international law to enforce a single deal.
In this two-part documentary, we trace how that system actually worked — from the
Sogdian merchants who ran it, to a 4th-century letter that was never delivered, to
the silk-for-horses trade that changed Chinese military history, to the disease that
turned the network's greatest strength into its biggest catastrophe.
Sources drawn from Sogdian Ancient Letters scholarship, Tang dynasty economic
records, and recent archaeogenetic research on the origins of the Black Death.
If you enjoy deep dives into the hidden economics of history, subscribe for more.
