Description
If you want to walk up into this country and come back down alive: www.Otisboone.com
The Appalachian Book of the Living and the Lost, everything I know about surviving these mountains, all in one place.
In 1974, the first person ever murdered on the Appalachian Trail was shot at a shelter, by a stranger who had spent the night right there with him. There are more than 250 shelters on that trail, and after a long, wet day every one of them looks like the safest bed on the mountain.
I grew up in these mountains, and I won't sleep in one.
In this video I'll walk you through what's really waiting in those shelters:
three killings at shelters, where strangers share the same roof and the same fire
the shelter where hikers say something walks the porch after dark
the thing living in the floorboards that put one hiker in the hospital for a month
the sickness that's been knocking hikers flat on the trail this year
the bears that remember exactly where every shelter is
and the one thing hikers keep writing about in the logbooks that nobody has ever explained
Stay to the end and I'll tell you exactly where I sleep instead, and why I still sign every logbook.
Have you ever slept in an Appalachian Trail shelter? Did anything happen that you still can't explain? Tell me in the comments.
