Description

In 2013, a computer engineer in Wales accidentally threw away a hard drive. At the time, it seemed like a stupid mistake. Years later, that hard drive was believed to contain the private key to 8,000 Bitcoin — a fortune worth hundreds of millions of dollars. And it was sitting somewhere beneath a landfill. This is the extraordinary story of James Howells, the man who spent years trying to recover the Bitcoin he says was locked behind a lost hard drive buried at the Docksway landfill in Newport, Wales. The Bitcoin had been mined during the early days of the cryptocurrency, when Bitcoin was worth a fraction of what it would become. The hard drive contained the wallet data needed to access the coins, while the Bitcoin itself remained recorded on the blockchain. As Bitcoin's value exploded, so did the stakes. Howells developed plans to search the landfill, assembled specialists and proposed sophisticated excavation and recovery operations. But Newport City Council refused to allow the search, citing the practical and environmental difficulties involved. The dispute eventually reached the courts. In January 2025, the UK High Court struck out Howells' claim against Newport City Council, ruling that the case had no reasonable grounds for proceeding. The result left one extraordinary question unanswered: Is an $8,000-Bitcoin fortune still sitting somewhere underneath a mountain of garbage? The coins have never been moved from their original wallet addresses, according to Howells' court filings. But without access to the private key, they remain effectively inaccessible. This is the story of the hard drive, the landfill, the fortune, and the man who spent years trying to get it back.
