Description
How China and Pakistan Built the Impossible Road Nicknamed the Eighth Wonder of the World
The Karakoram Highway connects China and Pakistan through the exact point where the Himalayas, the Karakoram range, and the Hindu Kush collide — one of the most seismically violent landscapes on Earth. Built between the 1960s and 1979 largely by hand, on ropes, with hand drills against sheer cliffs, it cost more than 800 confirmed worker lives, roughly one for almost every mile of road, earning it the nickname "the Eighth Wonder of the World." Then in 2010, a massive landslide near Attabad dammed the Hunza River and created a brand-new 20km lake that swallowed an entire finished stretch of the highway underwater. This is the full story of building the world's highest, deadliest paved international road — and the disaster that erased part of it, and the tunnels engineers bored straight through a mountain to bring it back.
