Description

While many Ethiopian and Eritrean citizens share deep cultural ties, family connections and a common history, the relationship between their respective countries is politically and militarily adversarial - and has previously resulted in devastating conflict. Eritrean former UN diplomat Girmay Haile argues that both Horn of Africa states need to learn to coexist - by respecting both the binding 2018 Peace & Friendship Agreement and the 2000 Algiers Agreement. These legally awarded contested territories to Eritrea. Haile says that Ethiopia, which is landlocked and sends 95% of its trade through Djibouti, should secure port access through commercial deals, not military incursions. The alternative - war - will unleash more suffering. The 1961-1991 Eritrean independence war left about 200,000 dead, while the 1998-2000 war claimed 100,000 lives.
