Description
On a Tuesday night in November 2019, my neighbor Dolores crossed the street at twenty to eleven to knock on my door and ask if I was all right. Nothing was wrong. My upstairs lamp had just come on fifty minutes later than it had every other night that fall — and she noticed. That is the whole idea behind keeping a house safe after dark: a burglar decides in under a minute whether anyone is home and paying attention, and almost everything most people do at night tells him the opposite of what they think. After twenty-two years spent standing outside buildings asking exactly that question, here are the five things I do every night that make a hurried stranger cross my house off the list.
You will learn why the porch light you leave on all night is working against you, the sound that makes an empty house feel occupied, the single habit you should deliberately break every week, the object on your own step that quietly says "nobody's home," and the one thing I only ever had to do once.
None of it costs a dime, and you can do every one of them before you go to bed tonight.
Tell me in the comments which of the five you already do. The one with the most comments gets its own full video next.
Everything here is public, legal, and about making your own home look lived-in and alert.
