Hitler’s Arctic Retreat: The Destruction of Northern Europe I SLICE HISTORY | FULL DOCUMENTARY

By late 1944, Germany’s Arctic front was collapsing. As the Red Army advanced through the north, German forces retreated from Finland toward Norway under Operation Nordlicht, destroying roads, buildings and entire communities as they withdrew. The episode follows the Soviet offensive, the sinking of the Tirpitz, the destruction of Lapland and Finnmark, and the construction of new German defensive lines using thousands of Soviet prisoners of war. As Hitler’s regime crumbled, Allied and Norwegian forces prepared to regain control of the north, while evidence of forced evacuations, prison camps and war crimes revealed the devastating human cost of the final Arctic campaign.
