Just a generation ago this would have been a ridiculous question to even propose, since men clearly held a very dominant position in society and the economy… But well… today; women outnumber men in higher education, they outnumber them in the jobs market, they have significantly lower rates of unemployment, any new jobs that ARE created are going overwhelmingly to women, and in a growing number of high income cities… they are actually earning more than men as well. Despite the long standing gender pay gap argument/counterargument of men naturally gravitating towards more dangerous and highly compensated roles… it doesn’t really matter anymore, because in a growing number of high income metro areas women have either matched or exceeded their pay anyway. These are massively significant demographic trends with both good and bad implications on all of our lives… But tragically most people don’t want to look into them beyond supporting surface level arguments about “men being over”, or who the biggest victim is or whatever it is that social media has decided is important this week. The reality is that trends like this are not necessarily a sign of one “side” “winning” or the other “side” “losing”, they are almost always a sign of a much bigger change going on behind the scenes that just happens to influence one group slightly more than the other. Now unfortunately statistical nuance doesn’t make for clickable headlines, which is why (even outside of echo chamber algorithms) even serious media outlets are not exploring what these numbers really mean beyond reaffirming what their readers already think they know.
