Description
A rare look at Martin Van Buren (1782–1862), the 8th President of the United States, who served from 1837 to 1841.
Van Buren was one of the most influential political figures of early America and played a major role in shaping the modern American party system.
This remarkable half-plate daguerreotype was made by Mathew Brady around 1852, more than a decade after Van Buren left the presidency.
According to the Smithsonian, Van Buren reportedly braved a terrible storm to keep his appointment at Brady’s studio, explaining that he never broke an engagement if he could possibly keep it.
This historic portrait has been carefully restored and brought to life while preserving his authentic historical appearance.
The original daguerreotype is preserved by the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery.
Follow Real Faces of the Past for more authentic historical photographs, faithfully restored and brought back to life.
