Description

A courtship here runs three or four years. You do not live in the same place. You see him when the colonies happen to touch — a wedding, a funeral, a crew sent over to put up a barn — three or four times a year, with forty other people in the room. Add it up. About thirty days, ever. Then you are driven to his colony with everything you own in one wooden chest, and you live there for the rest of your life. I am the head cook on a colony of a hundred and fifty people in southern Alberta, and I was not born here. Neither was any other married woman on this place. Every one of us arrived alone, at about twenty, into a village where everybody else had known each other since birth — and not one man here has ever done that. In this video: what the day of arrival actually looks like, where a new wife sleeps in her first year, why her seniority does not travel with her, what going home is like once you are a visitor there — and the thing that happens to a woman here twice, the second time being the one that takes something out of you. My husband Andreas made a video about how work is decided on a colony, and he said there was one thing about it he could not explain. I explain it at the end of this one. His channel is linked below. SOURCES · Hutterites.org, "Marriage" and "Courtship" — the Hulba at the bride's colony, the wedding at the groom's, and the Saturday arrival met with "organised confusion" of shouting, coloured balloons and honking horns · Hutterite Families (Encyclopedia of World Cultures / JRank) — that the bride moves to the husband's colony, the length of courtships, the age at marriage, and that in some colonies the couple's bedroom is next to the husband's parents for the first year · Amish America, interview with Linda Maendel — the rotations women move through and how a turn comes round · Manitoba Co-operator, "Secrets of a Hutterite Kitchen" — the head cook as one of the five managerial roles held by women The reading I give at the end — that the women are trained broad because they are the part of a colony that circulates — is mine. Nobody here told me that. I say so in the video. If you find an error, put it in the comments and I will pin the correction. I would rather be right than look right. #Hutterite #Hutterites #colony #marriage #Anabaptist #Alberta
