Description
the country's defining industries.
This documentary takes you back into the old Canadian logging era — following the journey of timber from the forest to the sawmill and examining the difficult work required to keep that system moving.
In the early years, many logging trucks were adapted from surplus vehicles and modified by camp mechanics using whatever materials were available. The roads were nothing like the highways we know today. Mud, ice, muskeg, steep grades, spring breakup and brutal winter conditions were part of the job.
During the 1920s and 1930s, trucking gradually began replacing older methods of moving timber. By the 1940s and 1950s, diesel engines, heavier trucks and longer haul routes were changing the industry. The 1960s brought hydraulic loading equipment and larger transport systems. By the 1970s, the Canadian log truck had developed into a much more capable machine.
But this is not simply a story about trucks.
It is the story of the drivers who started before dawn, the mechanics who worked on engines in freezing temperatures, the road crews who built winter haul roads, the workers who loaded the timber and the small Canadian towns whose economies depended on the forest.
A log truck carried more than timber.
It connected logging camps, sawmills, highways and entire communities across Canada's forest regions.
From improvised trucks of the 1920s to the powerful rigs of the late 1970s, this documentary explores the machines, roads, camps, technology and people behind Canada's logging industry between 1920 and 1980.
If someone in your family drove a log truck, worked in a logging camp, repaired forestry equipment or worked at a sawmill, share their story in the comments.
This channel documents the forgotten working history of Canada — one operation, one era and one crew at a time.
