Description
In the 1960s, driving a logging truck through the mountains of British Columbia was unlike ordinary truck driving.
Forty-ton loads. Narrow mountain haul roads. No guardrails. Steep downhill grades. Rain, mud, snow, ice, and night runs where the headlights revealed only a small section of road ahead.
This documentary takes you inside the working world of British Columbia's logging industry and follows how logging truck drivers actually operated on these difficult mountain roads.
From the road crews inspecting the surface before the first truck moved, to loading and securing massive timber, managing brakes on long descents, navigating muddy roads, driving at night, and fitting heavy chains in winter, every part of the haul was built around practical experience.
But this story is not simply about trucks.
It is about the men who knew the roads corner by corner.
The road bosses who coordinated traffic.
The maintenance crews who kept the routes passable.
The loaders who balanced massive logs.
And the mill workers waiting at the bottom of the grade for the next load to arrive.
Much of this working knowledge never became part of the official historical record. It was passed from driver to driver through experience, repetition, conversation, and years spent on the same mountain roads.
This is the working history behind Canada's timber industry.
