Description
Polar Bear: 820 Days From Newborn Cubs to Independent Arctic Hunters
Across the frozen sea of Western Hudson Bay, this wildlife documentary follows a Polar bear mother through one of the most demanding journeys in the Arctic. After mating and building her strength by hunting seals, she travels inland, digs a hidden snow den, and gives birth to two tiny, helpless cubs.
Protected inside the den, the young Polar bear cubs survive on their mother’s warmth and rich milk. As winter ends, they leave the safety of the snow chamber and follow her toward the sea ice, where every step becomes a lesson in survival.
The mother teaches them how to swim through freezing water, travel across unstable ice, detect seal breathing holes, and approach prey without being noticed. She also risks her life to protect them from a powerful adult male. As the ice melts, the Polar bear family moves onto the coast, where a stranded whale provides a rare summer feast.
Over the following years, the cubs grow stronger and gradually learn to hunt. Their mother eventually begins pushing them away, signaling that their protected childhood is ending. Each young Polar bear must now face the Arctic alone.
In the final chapter, one nearly grown cub uses the lessons learned from its mother to make its first successful solo hunt. No longer dependent on its family, the young Polar bear walks alone across the frozen horizon, ready to begin an independent life in the wild.
