Description

Ancient Canada reveals one of the most extraordinary raptor discoveries ever made in North America: a nearly complete 76-million-year-old skeleton found in Alberta with almost every bone still lying in the position it held when the animal died. The fossil was discovered in 2014 in Dinosaur Provincial Park and belonged to Saurornitholestes langstoni, a small feathered predator related to Velociraptor. Unlike the scattered teeth and isolated bones that usually represent these dinosaurs, this specimen preserved almost the entire animal, missing only the end of the tail. That level of preservation gave scientists something they had never really had before: a complete look at the anatomy of a North American raptor. The skull revealed that Saurornitholestes was not simply a local version of Velociraptor. Its head was shorter and deeper, and detailed analysis showed that North American raptors belonged to a separate evolutionary lineage from the famous Asian forms. But one of the strangest discoveries was hiding in the front of its upper jaw. For more than a century, paleontologists had collected unusual ridged teeth known as Zapsalis without knowing exactly what animal they belonged to. In this skeleton, one of those teeth was finally found still sitting in its original position in the jaw, solving a mystery that had existed in museum collections for generations. Its shape and wear also suggested something unexpected: researchers proposed that this specialised tooth may have been used to preen and maintain feathers, much like modern birds use their beaks. In this video, we explore why complete raptor skeletons are so rare, what this incredible Canadian fossil revealed about the relationship between North American and Asian raptors, how one tooth solved a 100-year-old mystery, and what it may tell us about how these feathered predators cared for their plumage. #AncientCanada #CanadaHistory #Dinosaurs #PrehistoricCanada #Paleontology ⚠️ Some visuals are illustrative.
