Description

India’s freight ecosystem is undergoing a structural shift. For decades, road transport dominated because of its flexibility, door-to-door connectivity and ability to serve fragmented demand. But the economics of long-distance freight are changing as Dedicated Freight Corridors, multimodal terminals, containerisation, double-stack operations and improved rail infrastructure expand across the country. This creates a potential value migration from road to rail but the opportunity is much broader than simply replacing trucks with trains. The emerging freight network connects trucks, terminals, containers, railways, DFCs, ports and integrated logistics providers into a single ecosystem. As cargo volumes and utilisation increase, different parts of this value chain could capture a growing share of the economics. In this video, we break down the evolution of India’s freight market, the economics behind the road-to-rail shift, the role of DFCs and terminals, and the potential profit pools across wagons, containers, train operators, terminals and integrated logistics.
