Subscribe to the channel: https://www.youtube.com/@FloridaGilded/videos%E2%80%A2%20?sub_confirmation=1 In January 1927, the governor of Florida came to a town eight months old to watch its people parade in Arabian costumes shipped down from New York, past white domes and minarets rising out of the pine woods north of Miami. Opa-locka was the dream of Glenn Curtiss — once the fastest man on earth at 136 miles an hour, then an aviation pioneer — and an architect who built a whole city from a book of fairy tales. It was beautiful, and it was an advertisement. This is how a city built to be sold ran out of buyers.
