Subscribe to the channel: https://www.youtube.com/@FloridaGilded/videos%E2%80%A2%20?sub_confirmation=1 In the twelve months before Hurricane Helene, Sarasota County drew about 2.9 million visitors, and more than half of them spent time on Siesta Key — a beach named the best in America more than once, its sand so pure the scientist who ranked it said it felt wrong to walk on in shoes. Then in the fall of 2024, two hurricanes two weeks apart put the whole island underwater and closed the bridges to everyone. This is the story of how one thin strip of sand made an island famous, and how the same Gulf that delivered that sand kept coming back for it.
