Description
Long Island is not a landform in any ordinary sense. It is the rubble line where an ice sheet a mile thick stopped advancing and dropped everything it had been carrying for a thousand miles.
Rock scraped off New England. Sand ground out of the Hudson valley. All of it bulldozed south and dumped in a line when the ice melted.
That debris pile then did something almost nowhere else on the eastern seaboard does. It filled with fresh water — and three million people now drink exclusively from it, with no reservoir, no river, and no pipeline as backup.
This is 25 facts about how a pile of glacial garbage became some of the most valuable real estate on Earth: two terminal moraines, the sole source aquifer, the Pine Barrens, the Montauk bluffs, Fire Island, Great South Bay oysters, Levittown, Grumman and the Lunar Module, Brookhaven, and Cold Spring Harbor.
Fact 1 explains why every other fact on this list exists.
