Description
At Bell Labs, researchers used an IBM 704 computer to produce a synthesized performance of the song "Daisy Bell (Bicycle Built for Two)." It became one of the earliest and most famous demonstrations of computer-generated singing.
Science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke witnessed the demonstration, and the experience helped inspire one of cinema's most unforgettable moments.
In Stanley Kubrick's legendary film 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), the artificial intelligence HAL 9000 sings "Daisy Bell" as its systems are being shut down.
What began as an experiment in computer speech synthesis became an iconic moment in science fiction history.
From primitive synthesized voices to today's incredibly realistic AI-generated speech, technology has come a long way.
Would you find this computer voice fascinating or terrifying? 👀
