Description
She walked into Grandma's kitchen with hair that was 70% grey and silver.
She walked out with rich, deep, dark hair so full and glossy that people could hardly recognize her.
No chemical dye. No salon appointment. No harsh ingredients that damage the strand over time.
Just two plant powders Grandma's generation has trusted for longer than most people can remember — and one step that almost everybody gets wrong.
Here is the mistake most people make. They buy henna, rub it onto their grey hair, and wonder why it turns orange instead of dark. Then they give up and go back to chemical dye.
What they missed is the second step. And without it, henna alone will never give you the dark colour you are looking for.
🌿 Henna — gives the grey strand its first layer of colour. On its own, grey hair takes on a warm copper-red tone. This is not the final result — it is the foundation.
🫙 Amla — traditionally loved for strengthening and conditioning the hair. Grandma adds it to the henna mix because it complements it beautifully and supports the health of the strand.
🌑 Indigo — this is the step most people miss entirely. Applied over the henna foundation, indigo takes those warm copper tones much darker — into deep brown and soft black.
🫖 Strong Black Tea — used to mix the paste and deepen the final colour naturally.
Mix four tablespoons of henna with two tablespoons of amla. Add strong black tea little by little while stirring until you have a smooth, thick paste. Let it rest so the plant dye has time to release. Apply to grey strands completely from root to end. Rinse. Then apply the indigo paste over the top.
Two stages. One beautiful result.
New grey growth will still come from the roots — that is simply how hair works. Touch up only when you need it. Always patch-test plant dyes before a full application.
Natural hair colour is not an overnight miracle. But done consistently and correctly — it is one of the most beautiful things Grandma has ever shared in this kitchen.
