Description

What makes a neighborhood… a neighborhood? Just east of downtown Toronto, St. James Town is home to nearly 20,000 people, packed into a dense cluster of high-rise towers. It was originally designed for young professionals who were never meant to stay. But over time, something unexpected happened. As those residents left, new communities moved in. Immigrants from across the world transformed the area into one of the most diverse neighborhoods in Canada. And in the absence of proper infrastructure, residents began to reshape the space themselves, creating informal gathering points, services, and networks in what was never designed to be a functioning neighborhood. This is the story of how St. James Town evolved from a modernist planning experiment into a “city within a city," and what it reveals about the limits of urban design.
