Description
On May 13, 1985, the Philadelphia Police Department dropped a bomb on the MOVE residence in West Philadelphia. The resulting fire killed 11 people, including five children, destroyed 61 homes, and left approximately 250 people homeless.
This cinematic historical documentary investigates the events that led to the MOVE bombing, the decisions made by Philadelphia's city leadership, and the devastating consequences for the people of Osage Avenue.
Through archival footage, historical records, and the findings of the 1986 Philadelphia Special Investigation Commission, we examine the confrontation between MOVE and city authorities, the use of military-grade explosives against a residential property, the city's handling of the ensuing fire, and the questions of race, power, and accountability that followed.
The commission later described the bombing plan as reckless, ill-conceived, and hastily approved. But official findings could not restore the lives lost or the homes destroyed.
More than four decades later, the MOVE bombing remains a defining and deeply troubling chapter in Philadelphia's history—and a reminder of the consequences when state power is exercised without adequate regard for human life.
Historical sources: Philadelphia Special Investigation Commission (1986); City of Philadelphia's independent report on the history and handling of MOVE victims' remains (2022); contemporary reporting and historical archives.
