Description

In 1903, America wanted a canal through Panama — but Panama belonged to Colombia, and Colombia said no. So Panama suddenly declared independence, with American warships watching offshore. Two weeks later, the brand-new country handed America the canal zone, in a treaty signed by a French engineer. This is how the Panama Canal — and Panama itself — happened. #history #panama #shorts
