Adrien Brody took his preparation for The Pianist to an extreme. To portray Holocaust survivor Władysław Szpilman, he gave up his apartment, sold his car, disconnected his phone, and lost around 30 pounds in just six weeks. He dropped to approximately 130 pounds while learning to play Chopin on the piano. But the transformation didn’t end when filming wrapped. Brody later revealed that the role left him seriously depressed for about a year, and he has spoken about experiencing lasting psychological effects from the experience.
