Description

Every Dragon in Norse Mythology Explained Góinn is one of the least celebrated creatures in all of Norse mythology, and yet he has been gnawing at the foundations of the world since before most heroes drew their first breath. Named in the Poetic Edda's Grímnismál, Góinn is listed among the many serpents coiled beneath Yggdrasil, the immense world tree whose roots stretch across every realm of existence. According to the poem, he is a son of Grafvitnir, making him part of a lineage defined entirely by destruction. His role is not dramatic. There is no battle, no prophecy, no famous enemy. He simply gnaws, endlessly and patiently, at the roots keeping the cosmos alive. His name is thought to translate roughly to "one who gapes," which suits him perfectly.
