Description
The IRS has published the federal income tax brackets for 2027, and every number in them went
up. For somebody still working, that is good news.
If your income comes from Social Security, part of it moves the other way.
Your cost-of-living adjustment and the bracket adjustment are calculated from different things
at different times. When your benefit rises faster than the brackets do, more of your income
sits above a line than sat there last year. Nobody votes for that and nobody announces it.
And there is a second mechanism that reaches you and does not reach your children at all.
Whether your Social Security is taxable is decided by "provisional income" — your adjusted
gross income, plus tax-exempt interest, plus half your benefits — measured against $25,000 for
a single filer and $32,000 for a married couple. Those figures were set in 1983 and 1993 and
have never been adjusted for inflation. Not once. The second pair, $34,000 and $44,000, where
up to 85% of your benefit becomes taxable, has never moved either.
Everything else in the tax code is indexed every year. Those four numbers are not.
What this video covers:
- The official 2027 brackets, standard deduction, and the additional amount for age 65+
- How far the brackets moved, and how that compares with the 2027 COLA
- How to work out your own provisional income in five minutes, from two forms you already have
- The two thresholds, and what actually becomes taxable at each one
- Why "85% taxable" does not mean what most people think it means
- A worked example of somebody sitting exactly on the line
- Qualified charitable distributions, and why they never touch your AGI
- Roth conversions, and the one thing they permanently solve
- The Medicare connection — the same AGI sets your Part B premium two years later
- Three things that can still be done before December 31
- Why the new $6,000 senior deduction will NOT keep you under the threshold
